Since 1999 Peddle Thorp Architects and Burbank Homes have worked together to produce a range of high quality residential projects including the Waterford Green Estate. It was Peddle Thorp's pleasure to be involved with Burbank again through the opportunity to revitalise the former educational facility at 19 Berry Street, Yarraville.
Burbank's 'Yarravillage' site located between Berry and Stephen Streets in Yarraville presented a unique and extremely well serviced residential development opportunity within 8km of the CBD.
Surrounded by a mixture of newer residential apartments, detached houses and well preserved terrace housing, the architectural concept was to integrate the development with the residential precinct and its neighbourhood character.
The site itself covers a large 'L' shaped area with frontages to both Berry and Stephen Streets. From these entry points to the site, internal paved and landscaped access ways lead through the development, coming to an end at the central internal garden with access through Nicholson Street to the Yarraville Gardens.
Fronting onto the streets are the individual residences, composed of three bedroom terrace housing. Embodying a traditional overall form with gabled roofs, the townhouse designs are updated with modern detailing, glazed and timber screens and expressive external facades.
The design of the development achieves a high environmental standard with attention given to excellent natural lighting, ventilation and direct interaction between living rooms and the generously landscaped garden spaces. Privacy was also carefully considered with louvers and screening panels positioned to protect windows and balconies.
The variety of designs incorporating a collection of traditional and modern materials varied in timber screens, balustrade design, privacy screens and roof form mean that each dwelling has a sense of identity and individuality; this in combination with the high quality landscape design creates an integrated residential environment that we have been pleased to have an involvement with.
